Silver Dolphins dominate provincial masters swimming championships

Held over the weekend of March 31, the 2006 Ontario Masters Swimming Championship attracted over 550 swimmers from 59 masters teams throughout Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and the U.S. The local London Dolphins scored a total of 7,838 points, eclipsing their nearest rival by almost 3,700 points. The 64 members of the Dolphins ranged in age from 19 to 76 and brought home a total of 78 first place finishes. The team also established 10 provincial and 6 national records.
On the women’s side, the team was lead by 76 year old Alice Lawrence swimming in the women’s 75 to 79 year old age group. Other gold medalists amongst the women included Linda Quigley (65 to 69), Anneke Salmon (50 to 54), Jeanette Eberhard and Tracey Baker (45 to 49), Cathy Macdonald (40 to 44), Kim Brochu and Amy Bartoch (30 to 34), Elizabeth Frisk, Jessica Blake and Lisa Chin (25 to 29) and Jen Kerkhof, Kathy Manness and Aimee Fishman in the 18 to 24 age group.
Amongst the men, gold medalists included Bryan Finlay in the 60 to 64 age group, Rob Stoddart (55 to 59), Ron Scafe (50 to 54), Tony Frost (45 to 49), Chris Engelke (40 to 44), Tony Stackhouse and Brandon Lawrence (30 to 34) and Johnny Hewerdine, Nathan Degiorgio, Paul Armstrong and Matt Wood in the 25 to 29 to age group.
New provincial records were set by Johnny Hewerdine in the 800 Free (8:38.3), Elizabeth Frisk in the 200 Backstroke (2:26.7), Alice Lawrence in the 200 Free (4:02.3) and the women’s 400 Medley relay (Sarah Waugh, Lisa Chin, Jen Kerkhof and Michelle Addley), in the 72 to 99 age group with a time of 5:32.6.
National marks were established by Kim Brochu in the 100 Butterfly (1:04.9), Anneke Salmon, Rob Stoddart, Chuck Grace and Tracey Baker in the mixed 400 Medley, 200-239 age group, (5:19.4) and Chuck Grace, Rob Stoddart, Bill Young and Nick Gilbert in the men’s, 200-239 age, 400 Medley (4:43.3).
Matt Wood, Paul Armstrong, Brandon Lawrence and Johnny Hewerdine combined for 3 national marks in the 100 to 119 age group – 400 Free (3:31.5), 200 Medley (1:51.6) and the 200 Free (1:37.76).
